3 Heartburn Symptoms You Should Never Ignore
Occasional heartburn is normal and something most people will experience. However, there are some symptoms of heartburn that shouldn’t be ignored. You should see a gastroenterologist if you experience any of these 3 symptoms:
Frequent Heartburn – Having heartburn/acid reflux 2-3 times a week or more is likely causing damage to your esophagus. Damage can include ulcers, erosions, and stricture. Over time, this can lead to Barrett’s esophagus and even esophageal cancer.
Heartburn despite using over-the-counter medications – There are many different over-the-counter medications to treat heartburn and acid reflux. If these medications don’t work and your symptoms persist, we recommend an appointment with a gastroenterologist.
Severe Symptoms: Any severe symptoms of the upper GI tract should be evaluated by a doctor. These include difficulty swallowing, persistent nausea or vomiting, or weight loss because of difficulty eating or a lack of appetite.
If you have any of these symptoms, we recommend an appointment with a gastroenterologist. They can help diagnose the root cause of your heartburn and recommend a treatment plan.
