Procedure

FibroScan®

FibroScan®, also called transient elastography, is a new, FDA approved test used to assess liver damage through the use of an ultrasound probe. FibroScan® detects fibrosis or fatty deposits in your liver caused by chronic liver diseases such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and excessive alcohol consumption. FibroScan® is a non-invasive, painless alternative to a liver biospy.

During the procedure, you will lie on your back with your right arm raised behind your head and your right abdominal area exposed. The nurse will apply a water-based gel to your skin and then place the ultrasound probe over your liver with gentle pressure. During the exam, you may feel a slight vibration on the skin at the tip of the probe as it delivers ultrasound waves to the area for measuring purposes. The exam takes about 10 minutes and after the test, you can immediately return to normal activities. The test results will be reviewed by your physician and he or she will contact you to discuss the results and a treatment plan.
