GCSA Advocates for Screening Colonoscopy Beginning at Age 45

Why You Shouldn't Put Off Your Colonoscopy Over Age 45

In light of the recent guidance statement issued by the American College of Physicians (APA), Gastroenterology Consultants of San Antonio continues to align with leading gastroenterology communities and specialists in emphasizing the importance of colorectal cancer (CRC) screening for individuals beginning at the age of 45.

Guidelines issued by APA suggested that clinicians start CRC screening for asymptomatic average-risk adults at age 50 and showed reservations regarding screening those between 45 and 49 years.

Dr. Barbara Jung, the president of the American Gastroenterological Association, stated, “Studies show that CRC is increasing in younger patients, and we have data backing screening for average-risk patients at 45. Bottom line: it saves lives. To release contradictory guidance is reckless.”

With alarming projections indicating that by 2030, CRC could be the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in individuals under the age of 50, it becomes imperative to reevaluate and adjust preventive measures. The call for colonoscopy screening at 45 is not merely a number; it’s a strategic move aiming at early detection and better patient outcomes.

GCSA stands in unison with organizations like Fight CRC, Colon Cancer Coalition, the American Cancer Society, and the US Preventive Service Task Force, who all advocate for colonoscopies to start at 45. This is not just about age – it’s about prevention, proactivity, and, most importantly, saving lives.

The gastroenterology community wishes to emphasize the point that screenings are not just empty protocols; they are life-saving interventions. And when evidence suggests that starting earlier can make a difference, it’s important we listen.

If you are age 45 or older, it’s time to schedule your screening colonoscopy – don’t wait until you are 50. It could save your life.
