5 Ways to Prevent Colon Cancer

Older Adults

1. Get Screened!

Schedule your colonoscopy when you turn 45 (earlier if you have increased risk) and talk to your doctor if you have symptoms or are considered high risk. A colonoscopy can catch cancer early, when it’s most treatable, and help prevent the disease by finding abnormal polyps that can turn into cancer. Read more or schedule now.

2. Maintain a Healthy Weight

Nothing else raises the overall risk of cancer more than being overweight. Determine your target weight and maintain this throughout life.

3. Get Moving

30 minutes or more of moderate activity each day reduces your risk for many diseases, including colon cancer. It gives you a mental boost too!

4. Eat a Well-Balanced Diet

Eating too much red meat increases your risk of colon cancer. Try to eat no more than 3 servings per week…and eat your veggies!

5. Limit Alcohol and Don’t Smoke

Heavy drinking increases your risk for colon cancer and smoking is a known cause for many cancers. Keep alcohol consumption to a minimum and quit all tobacco use.
