6 Lies About Colonoscopies. Believe Them at Your Own Risk

Colonoscopy Myths

Colorectal cancer, sometimes called colon cancer, is highly treatable if detected early and often preventable with screening. A colonoscopy is a screening test used to find abnormal growths in the colon or rectum which can then be removed before they turn into cancer. Identifying colorectal cancer at an early stage can make treatments more effective.

A colonoscopy is a simple and potentially life-saving procedure. Many people are hesitant to be screened, because of fears or misconceptions. Avoiding a colonoscopy

Reason 1: I’m not at risk for colon cancer.

You may believe you are too young or too healthy to have colon cancer. However,
certain factors can increase risk.

These factors include having:

  • A family member who had colorectal cancer or polyps
  • A history of polyps or abnormal growths in the colon
  • An inflammatory bowel disease

Additionally, lifestyle factors can increase your risk of colon cancer, like:

  • Eating a diet that includes a lot of fat, meat, and processed food.
  • Being obese
  • Living a sedentary lifestyle
  • Smoking

Even without these factors, it is recommended that people at average risk begin screening at age 45.

Reason 2: The preparation is too complicated.

The prep, usually a drink, is done 24 hours before a colonoscopy and clears out the colon. During this time solid food is avoided and clear liquids are consumed. It is very important to closely follow the preparation instructions to ensure the most accurate result possible.

There are several different prep options to make the process as simple as possible. Your doctor can help you choose the prep that works best for you.

Reason 3: A colonoscopy is painful.

General anesthesia is usually given so people don’t experience any pain or discomfort. You’ll be asleep for the entire procedure and you won’t remember the procedure at all when you wake up. Some cramping, bloating, or discomfort may occur afterward, but it is normally mild and passes quickly.

Reason 4: It’s embarrassing.

For some, the idea of a colonoscopy is embarrassing, and they would rather avoid it. The medical staff is trained professionals. They work to keep people at ease and the process as comfortable as possible. There is no need to feel shame or embarrassment in their care!

Reason 5: I have no symptoms of colon cancer.

People who have early-stage colon cancer or polyps usually do not experience symptoms. Symptoms of colon cancer usually only appear during the later and more dangerous stages of the disease.

Symptoms may include:

  • Stomach pain
  • Tiredness
  • Weakness or shortness of breath
  • Changes in bowel movement frequency
  • Changes in bowel movement appearance
  • Blood in the stool

It is important not to wait until symptoms appear before getting screened. Finding and removing polyps is the best way to prevent colon cancer. And if there is colon cancer, early detection makes treatment more successful.

Reason 6: Recovery is difficult.

A colonoscopy usually takes less than an hour. You can go home the same day but should arrange for transportation and plan to rest comfortably until recovered. A normal routine can typically be resumed the next day.

Colorectal cancer is preventable and treatable, but only if detected early!

Don’t delay – schedule a colonoscopy today.
