Men’s Health Month
November is here. Some call it Movember, others participate in No-Shave November. Either way, we all agree that it is the perfect time to focus on men’s health. These popular campaigns have provided a creative and engaging way to highlight the signs, symptoms, and screening options for male related cancers and conditions.
As fellow men’s health specialists in San Antonio, Gastroenterology Consultants of San Antonio is proud to team up with Urology San Antonio to spread the word about conditions affecting the men in our lives.
Colon cancer is the 2nd leading cause of cancer related deaths in the US, but it doesn’t have to be. Early detection can eliminate 90% of these cancers. Talk to your doctor about screening. If you are over 50 (45 for African-Americans), schedule your colonoscopy. It could save your life.
Liver disease is on the rise. At least 30 million people—or one in 10 Americans—have some form of liver disease. The obesity epidemic has resulted in many Americans developing a buildup of excess fat in their liver called fatty liver disease. If detected and treated early, liver disease is reversible. A healthy diet, regular exercise and moderate use of alcohol can prevent liver disease from developing.
Gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) is a common condition in men that, over time, could develop into something more serious. Left untreated, GERD can cause scarring and inflammation of the esophagus and can increase your chances of esophageal cancer. Anyone experiencing chronic heartburn symptoms should be evaluated by a gastroenterologist for an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan.
So, go ahead, grow that mustache or beard, but don’t forget to take care of yourself too. Schedule your colonoscopy, say yes to that pickup basketball game with your buddies, but skip the greasy burger afterwards. Your health will thank you!
