Men’s Preventive Health

We Offer Excellence in Men’s Health

Established in 1978, Gastroenterology Consultants of San Antonio offers the most comprehensive GI care in South Texas.

Our board certified gastroenterologists are specially trained in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases involving the digestive system (esophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, liver, pancreas and gallbladder). Our physicians and experienced staff are dedicated to clinical excellence through a quality assurance program that includes patient opinion surveys, outcome analysis and peer reviews.

All of our physicians have been board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the Subspecialty Board of Gastroenterology. In addition, our physicians frequently attend medical education programs both locally and nationally. We work together as a team—sharing knowledge and skills—to ensure we provide the highest level of care.

Convenience & Customer Service Are A Priority

We know our patients’ time is valuable. Phone calls are returned and questions answered on the same day whenever possible.
Because the “little things” can also make a big difference, we offer online scheduling, a patient portal for online communications and flexible appointment times to accommodate our patients’ busy schedules.

Things To Know About Your GI Health

Heartburn

Heartburn symptoms may be a sign of a more serious problem, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD. Left untreated, GERD can lead to esophagitis (bleeding, scarring), esophageal strictures, and Barrett’s esophagus (a change in the lining of the esophagus that increases the risk of developing an invasive cancer known as adenocarcinoma).

Anyone experiencing chronic heartburn symptoms should be evaluated by a gastroenterologist for an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan.

Liver Disease

Hepatitis C

  • The CDC recommends that all baby boomers (born from 1945-1965) get tested for hepatitis C.
  • There are several new treatment options for hepatitis C with high cure rates and far fewer side effects than previous treatment regimens.

Fatty Liver

  • Fatty liver is the most common liver condition in the US and is often silent, producing no symptoms, especially in the beginning.
  • 20 percent of Americans have fatty liver disease (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic).

Cirrhosis & Liver Cancer

  • Hepatitis C and fatty liver can lead to permanent scarring or cirrhosis which increases your chance of developing liver cancer.
  • Each year, about 21,000 Americans are diagnosed with primary liver cancer—one of the few cancers on the rise in the U.S.

It is important to catch liver disease early. If treated successfully in early stages, the liver may have a chance to heal itself and recover.
