HALO™/Barrx™ Radiofrequency Ablation
HALO™ radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a highly-specialized endoscopic technique used to treat patients with Barrett’s esophagus. Barrett’s esophagus is a pre-cancerous condition in which the lining of the lower esophagus has been damaged by repeated exposure to stomach acid.
The Halo™ RFA procedure uses short, controlled bursts of heat inside the esophagus to destroy the pre-cancerous Barrett’s lining and replace it with normal esophageal cells. In a series of outpatient procedures—all done without an incision—HALO protects healthy tissue in the esophagus and patients are able to go home the same day.
The RFA procedure is performed in conjunction with an upper endoscopy in an outpatient setting. You will be sedated and will need to follow your physician’s instructions for fasting and medication restriction.
