SmartPill® motility evaluation
SmartPill® is an ingestible capsule that measures pressure, pH and temperature as it travels through the gastrointestinal (GI) tract to assess GI motility. The SmartPill® motility monitoring test can be performed at a physician’s office to evaluate motility disorders like gastroparesis (a condition in which the contents of the stomach empty too slowly) and chronic constipation.
A capsule is swallowed by the patient. As the capsule travels through the digestive system, it collects data and wirelessly sends that information to a data receiver that is worn on a lanyard around the neck or on a belt clip. The patient is free to move about during the exam and can return to normal activity such as work during the exam. At the end of the procedure, the data is downloaded from the receiver into a computer, and the data is later reviewed by a physician. The capsule is passed by the patient into the toilet and flushed away. It does not need to be retrieved or returned.
