Superbug Infection Risk Limited to Highly Specialized Equipment Used in Only in Hospitals

At Gastroenterology Consultants of San Antonio we take great pride in the quality of care we provide to our patients and follow the highest standards of sterilization of our equipment.

Recent infections have been linked to transmissions occurring during endoscopic procedures, but these infections only occur with a specific instrument called a duodenoscope (ERCP Scope). A duodenoscope is a specialized endoscope that is used for highly advanced endoscopic procedures and is performed only in the hospital and not in the outpatient setting. It’s important to keep in mind that transmission is linked specifically to the type of endoscope used and not with a breakdown of the approved techniques for cleaning routine endoscopic equipment. The equipment used for routine colonoscopy and upper GI endoscopy is not impacted by this particular superbug. If you have any questions or concerns related to this topic, please do not hesitate to discuss them with your physician.
