15 Common Causes of Stomach Pain

causes of stomach pain

Stomach pain can affect anyone, and the intensity can range from mild discomfort to severe, debilitating pain. Whether you’re experiencing occasional discomfort or chronic pain, it’s important to find out what the causes of your stomach pain are and what steps you can take to find relief.

15 Common Causes of Stomach Pain

Here are 15 of the most common causes of stomach pain. Some causes may be treated and managed with lifestyle changes or medications, while others may require more intense medical intervention.

1. Indigestion

Indigestion occurs when your digestive system cannot break down food properly. Eating too quickly, overeating, or eating high-fat or spicy foods can also cause indigestion. If you have indigestion, you may experience a burning sensation in the stomach, bloating, or nausea.

2. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)

GERD is a chronic digestive disease where stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, causing heartburn and stomach pain. If you have a weakened or relaxed lower esophageal sphincter, are obese, or have a hiatal hernia, you may experience GERD.

3. Peptic ulcers

Peptic ulcers are sores that develop in the stomach lining or small intestine that can cause you to experience a burning or gnawing pain in your stomach. Peptic ulcers can be caused by the bacteria Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like aspirin or ibuprofen, or excessive alcohol consumption.

4. Constipation

Constipation occurs when stool moves too slowly through the colon, causing abdominal pain, bloating, and discomfort. Common causes of constipation include a low-fiber diet, dehydration, or certain medications.

5. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

IBS is a digestive disorder that can cause cramping, bloating, and abdominal pain. The exact cause of IBS is unknown, but stress, certain foods, and hormonal changes can trigger symptoms.

6. Gastritis

Gastritis is an inflammation of the stomach lining that can cause stomach pain, nausea, and vomiting. Gastritis may be due to infection with the bacteria Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), excessive alcohol consumption, or the use of NSAIDs like aspirin or ibuprofen.

7. Food intolerances and allergies

You may experience stomach pain after consuming certain foods you are intolerant or allergic to, such as lactose, gluten, or nuts. Symptoms can include stomach pain, bloating, diarrhea, or constipation.

8. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)

IBD is a chronic condition that causes inflammation in the digestive tract, resulting in symptoms like abdominal pain, diarrhea, and weight loss. Ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease are two types of IBD.

9. Gallstones

Gallstones are hard deposits in the gallbladder and can cause sharp abdominal pain. High cholesterol levels, excess bilirubin, or a combination of both can cause gallstones.

10. Appendicitis

When the appendix becomes inflamed and infected, it can cause severe abdominal pain. The exact cause of appendicitis is unknown, but it is a medical emergency and can be treated with surgery and antibiotics.

11. Pancreatitis

Pancreatitis is an inflammation of the pancreas that can cause abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. Gallstones, excessive alcohol intake, or certain medications can cause pancreatitis.

12. Diverticulitis

Diverticulitis is an inflammation of the small pouches that can form in the colon. Diverticulitis can cause cramping and pain, often on the left side of the abdomen. A low-fiber diet or constipation may cause you to experience diverticulitis.

13. Kidney stones

Kidney stones are hard mineral deposits that can form in the kidneys and cause severe pain in the lower abdomen or back. Dehydration, a high-sodium diet, or certain medical conditions may cause you to develop kidney stones.

14. Endometriosis

Endometriosis occurs when the tissue that usually lines the uterus grows outside of it. It can cause abdominal pain, heavy periods, and fertility problems and may be due to hormonal imbalances.

15. Food poisoning

Food poisoning is an illness caused by consuming contaminated food or drink. Symptoms can include stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Don’t Let Stomach Pain Slow You Down

Abdominal pain is generally preventable. Maintaining a healthy diet, staying hydrated, avoiding trigger foods, and engaging in regular exercise and stress management techniques like meditation or yoga can help prevent digestive issues.

Stomach pain can have many different causes, and the treatment will depend on the underlying condition. If your stomach pain last more than a few days or you have severe abdominal pain, don’t ignore it. Schedule an appointment with a gastroenterologist to determine the cause of your pain and get the best treatments.
