A 42-year-old Man Had Digestive Issues – It was Stage 4 Colon Cancer

42 year old colon cancer

Tom McKenna was 40 when he first experienced digestive issues. He ended up being diagnosed with advanced colon cancer. Now he’s sharing his story to raise awareness about the signs and symptoms of colon cancer. He urged people to pay attention to changes in their bowel habits and to see a doctor if they experience any concerning symptoms.

Colon cancer is the third most common cancer in men and women in the United States. It is also the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the country, and the rate of cancer in people under 50 is rising.

McKenna first noticed he had to use the toilet more frequently than usual and was experiencing diarrhea and blood in his stool. He initially brushed it off, but when the symptoms persisted, he decided to see a doctor. After undergoing a colonoscopy, he was diagnosed with colon cancer. Further testing showed that it had spread to his liver.

He underwent treatment, which included the removal of 60% of his liver. Right now, there are no signs of cancer in his body. He’ll be monitored every 6 months to make sure it doesn’t come back.

Gastroenterologists recommend that people at average risk of colon cancer should begin regular screening at the age of 45. Those at higher risk, such as those with a family history of colon cancer or certain other medical conditions, may need to begin screening at a younger age.

McKenna’s story serves as a reminder that colon cancer can often have subtle signs and symptoms, which is why it’s so important to pay attention to any changes in your body and to see a doctor if you have any concerns.

His story also highlights the importance of early detection and regular screening. With appropriate screening, colon cancer can be prevented entirely.

Don’t delay colon cancer screening if you are 45 or older – schedule a colonoscopy today.
